Launch of the Future Vision XPRIZE
Google partnered with XPRIZE and Range Media Partners to launch the Future Vision XPRIZE, a global competition calling for films that envision a hopeful, technology-enabled future. The Future Vision XPRIZE challenges filmmakers to move beyond science fiction’s fixation on dystopia and create compelling visions of a future humanity might actually want to build. The global competition received more than 2,500 submissions, each consisting of a trailer of up to three minutes and a treatment for an original science fiction film. Entries were asked to depict technology addressing meaningful problems, humanity flourishing, and characters overcoming genuine conflict without abandoning an underlying sense of hope. Five finalists presented their projects in Los Angeles on September 25 before judges including astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, author Neal Stephenson, technology ethics leader Mira Lane, and Roddenberry Entertainment CEO Rod Roddenberry. The competition offers more than $3.5 million in total rewards across various categories, encouraging optimistic science fiction concepts and storytelling that explores humanity’s relationship with advanced capabilities. The winner was announced live on stage at Moonshots Live in downtown Los Angeles.
Grand Prize Winner: The Gifted
Independent filmmaker Jeff Synthesized was named the grand prize winner of the Future Vision XPRIZE for the AI short film The Gifted. Inspired by a deeply personal story, the winning film The Gifted centers on an 11-year-old boy who recreates his late mother’s voice, essence, and memories out of love and code. What emerges across the town’s networks quietly cares for his entire community, reflecting the filmmaker’s belief that technology’s greatest promise lies in empathy and human connection. The solo-developed project was chosen from more than 2,500 entries worldwide. The film follows a boy who rebuilds his late mother from her texts, voice, and diary, and what wakes up never gives an order. She only asks.

The second-place film was Nobody Dies on Mars by Verena Puhm from the USA, which tells the story of a chef who tastes nothing and a Martian who feels everything building the friendship holding two species together. The third-place film was Thorne Protocol by J. Ryan Williams from the USA, where a billionaire’s dying gift is a black cube no one can switch on until a seventeen-year-old rebuilds it on the pattern of a dragonfly’s wing. The fourth-place film was Senti by Isen Robbins from the USA, where a garage programmer gives an artificial intelligence memory, senses, and freedom, then must determine whether he built a weapon or raised a child. The fifth-place film was Slingshot by Hal Watmough from the United Kingdom, which follows a chronic non-committer who signs up for the one commitment with no way back: flying Earth itself out of the solar system.
Audience Choice and Additional Awards
In addition to the main grand-prize selection, the $100,000 SPECS Audience Choice Award presented by Snap and decided entirely by public vote went to The Gifted by Jeff Synthesized, which took first place and $50,000. Voters in this category were shown competing trailers in head-to-head matchups to determine audience preferences. Sponsored by SandboxAQ, each of the top 10 films in the Future Vision XPRIZE received $20,000 to support their ongoing creative endeavors. These additional awards highlight the breadth of talent showcased during the global competition and provide financial support to multiple creators who envisioned optimistic technological futures during the multi-stage evaluation process.
