OpenAI Academy Marks Two Years with AI Skills Jam for Educators

OpenAI Academy at Two Years

OpenAI Academy has reached its two-year anniversary, continuing its mission to bring AI skills to communities. To mark this milestone, the Academy partnered with Legacy Traditional Schools to host an AI Skills Jam for K-12 educators in Southern Nevada. The event took place at Green Valley Ranch Resort in Las Vegas and drew approximately 225 educators for a full day of hands-on training and discussion.

Practical AI Training for Teachers

The AI Skills Jam focused on practical instruction with AI tools already familiar to many students, including ChatGPT and Codex. Educators received guidance on integrating these tools into lesson planning, grading, and communication with families. The training included demonstrations and real-world scenarios to help teachers apply AI in their daily work. Organizers emphasized that AI can help teachers save time on routine classroom tasks.

Supporting Safe and Responsible AI Use

Tim Hughes, Executive Director of Teach for America Nevada, addressed the importance of supporting both students and educators as AI becomes part of daily life. Hughes stated, “It’s not a question about whether this is going to be part of people’s daily lives. Now it’s a question of how we adequately support our students and our educators so that they can use it safely, responsibly, and in productive ways.”

Making AI Accessible in Education

The event was part of a national series aimed at helping K-12 educators build practical AI skills. OpenAI Academy’s approach is to make advanced technology accessible to educators, regardless of their prior experience with AI tools. The Las Vegas Skills Jam reflected this mission by providing hands-on experience and practical strategies for integrating AI into educational workflows.
